Feed-in tarrifs

Feed-in tarrif for renewable energy sources

The U.K. Government has introduced a new feed-in tariff for renewable micro-power generation equipment to take effect from April this year. The tariff is intended as an incentive for small householders and businesses to installed renewable micro-generation equipment. It guarantees a fixed premium rate for the energy produces for a period of 25 years. Power companies are obliged to pay the tariff, the cost of which will be passed onto all customers. So don’t miss out, if you are responsible for paying the utility bill, you will be subsidizing the scheme in any event! Right now the tariff is only available with systems installed with Micro-generation Certification Scheme’ (MCS) approved installers and using MCS approved panels, but including those similarly approved systems installed since July 2009.

Key points:

Up to 37.5p (for retrofit PV panels) paid per kWhr based on type and size
Tarrif will reduce by 7% yearly for new systems. The rate in the first year fixed for 25 years
5p paid for every kWhr exported back to the grid
Tariffs will not be subject to income tax
        Includes all systems below 5MW
All forms of renewable energy applicable but different rates apply
