Installing a Photovoltaic array

Which system is right for you?

Most people in the u.k. have access to grid electricity, and installing a photovoltaic array that feeds electricity to the home and excess back to the grid is the most cost effective option.  Although, if the grid is down, you will not be able to able to benefit from solar electricity  either, as by law, the system is required to shut down to prevent current being feed back to the grid, which could be a danger to maintenance personnel working on the lines. If you live in a remote locations, off the utility grid, an off grid photovoltaic system may be an ideal solution, otherwise a grid tie system will offer higher efficiencies, unlimited storage and considerably lower cost.  A grid tie system with battery backup is possible but unless you live in an area of frequent blackouts, may also not be worth the additional expense. This article focuses on installing a grid tie system that will be the preferred choice for many people.
